Matthew: That was where we had camped the night before, and then that was all the fog over [name of place], it was just starting to disappear and because I think when we first woke up we couldn’t, we could barely see to the end of the rock pile but it looks like, I think it looks a lot higher than it actually is because that’s not cloud, that’s just fog.

Katharine: I see.

Matthew: But this was like our escape from everything was going for these long, long hikes and I mean I really like that picture… Those are … some of my enduring memories of having the pandemic will be because I was meant to walk the ….  coast path but obviously  couldn’t because of everything that was going on.

Quote from interview with Matthew, November 2020. Matthew is a white British man in his twenties, and he lived in the South West during the first national lockdown. He voted to remain in the EU.

bricklaying

for nine months

We’ve spent the whole year doing this project in the garden which has basically meant me bricklaying for nine months. So, a bricklayer’s trowel would be my evocative object. We had to dig down quite a lot for the greenhouse and we ended up with two great mountains of earth; I had to fill loads of skips with the clay and get it taken away. And then we sifted and we made some raised beds. So, I have now got my seedlings growing in the greenhouse

Nick self-describes as British.  He is a white man, in his 60s, upper middle class and voted Leave in the referendum. He has lived in North East since his 20s, and is originally from the South of England.
